The German cockroaches prefer places in the home that are warm, dark with small cracks and crevices or other small, dark confined area.
The Brown-Banded cockroach can be found in high locations and are likely to be behind pictures, closet shelves, light fixtures, electrical sockets, furniture and appliance; anywhere that is warm and dry.
The Smokybrown cockroach can be found in planter boxes, woodpiles, and garages, under shingles or siding. They prefer the upper parts of buildings. During the summer months, they often get into trees, shrubs and other vegetation.
The American cockroach is likely to be found in warm, moist areas of industrial or commercial buildings as well as sewer and heat tunnels.
The Oriental cockroach prefers cool, damp, dark areas like sewer drains, damp crawl spaces, basements and cellars.

Why are cockroaches so difficult to get rid of? The biggest reason why is that cockroaches are inherently survivors. They have been around for, oh, about 300 million years. They found that the females could breed for years and multiply without ever mating with a male. This is called parthenogenesis. Since the lifespan of a cockroach is around a year, one cockroach can produce six generations of offspring!
Another reason is a roach’s tough exoskeleton. This tough exterior is sort of like an armor as it is made of many overlapping plates. This offers protection as well as flexibility for the roach to squeeze into tight places. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by the University of California, Berkeley, revealed that a cockroach’s exoskeleton could withstand 300 times their body weight when crawling through cracks and other instances 900 times their body weight.
